It’s funny how one event can have such a profound effect on your life. As I was recovering in the hospital, a sense of calm came over me. I started reflecting on my life and what is truly important to me. A simple, yet very powerful statement came to mind, “life is short”. My bout with cancer was brief, but it had a profound effect on me.

Senior year of high school is all about beginnings and endings. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, filled with things like transcripts, SAT scores, college applications, and financial aid. It’s an ending of 12 years of schooling, and all the highlights, bumps, and bruises endured along the way.

These words have been known to raise blood pressure, cause a grown woman to cry (either tears of joy or sadness), and provide a reason to consume a glass, or two, of wine. Once the announcement has settled, you are hit with the magnitude of those words — moving, PCSing, packing/unpacking. And whether you’ve PCS’ed one time or 22 times, moving is a stressful situation.

When summertime comes, all military families know PCS season will be in full swing. I’m no expert when it comes to PCSing, but in my 22 years as a Marine Corps spouse, we’ve conquered 12 moves, 15 houses, and 3 OCONUS moves (two of which were back-to-back overseas moves!). I’d say I’ve learned a thing or two about how to make military moves less stressful for me and the movers.
